Motif Dance Studio · Recreation

Thirty-six years, one paragraph online

Motif Dance Studio has trained three generations of dancers in the same building. Their website said almost nothing about any of it — no schedule, no instructors, no way to enrol without a phone call during studio hours.

The Motif Dance Studio homepage shown on a laptop and a phone, in black and white editorial style with a dancer mid-motion and the headline Dance into motion.
A striking image with almost nothing behind it — no schedule, no way to enrol, just a mission statement.

The problem

Thirty-six years in the same neighbourhood had made Motif a fixture, the kind of studio where staff remember former students' recital costumes. That history wasn't the problem. The website was: one page, one photo, a paragraph about “growth through dance,” and nothing a parent could actually use.

There was no visible class schedule, so a parent trying to fit ballet around a school pickup time had to call during studio hours — hours that overlapped with when staff were, naturally, teaching. There was no way to see who the instructors were before committing a child to a term of classes with a stranger.

Enrollment itself required a paper form picked up in person. For a studio competing with newer gyms and academies that let you sign up from a phone in bed at 9pm, that was a real disadvantage — the interest was there, but the friction cost enrollments before the front desk ever heard from them.

The approach

Three moves, in order.

01

Put the whole week on one page

A visual weekly timetable across all seven days replaced a phone call as the way to check whether Tuesday at 4pm has an opening in ballet.

02

Introduce the instructors before the first class

Portrait photos and a one-line specialty for each instructor let a parent choose based on more than a studio's word for it.

03

Move enrollment online, entirely

A short form with age-group selection replaces the paper sign-up sheet, and confirms a spot the same evening instead of at the next front-desk visit.

The work

What we built.

The new homepage

The new Motif Dance Studio homepage on desktop and mobile: a black and white dancer mid-motion beside a serif headline reading Thirty-six years in motion.
The homepage, leading with the studio's real asset. Thirty-six years in one neighbourhood, set in editorial serif against black and white.
The class schedule page: a weekly timetable grid with days as columns and time slots as rows, showing Ballet, Hip-Hop and Contemporary classes across the week.
The whole week, visible at once. This single page eliminated most of the scheduling calls the front desk used to field.
The instructors page: a three-column grid of instructor portrait photos with names and specialty captions for Ballet, Hip-Hop and Contemporary.
Instructors a parent can see and choose, not just take on faith.
The enroll today page: a form with dancer name, age, class interest and a row of selectable age-group pills, with a Start Enrollment button.
Enrollment that doesn't require a trip to the studio during business hours.

Also delivered

A short editorial history page pulling from thirty-six years of recital programs and photos, since that history was the studio's real asset and had never been told anywhere the public could see it.

Years finally represented on the homepage

“We'd tell people we'd been here thirty-six years and they'd look at our website and wonder why it didn't look like it. Now a parent can see the whole week, pick an instructor, and sign up before we've even had the first conversation.”
