A plumber that looks like the work, not the van

Every plumbing site in Calgary is the same blue van, the same thumbs-up stock photo and the same coupon. Copper Plumbing wanted to be hired for its workmanship, so we built the site around the material itself: dark, warm and unhurried, with the phone number never more than one tap away.

Role
Art direction, generated film and imagery, front-end build
Year
2026
Deliverables
Responsive landing page (React, Vite, Tailwind), hero and service films, icon set, contact and service-area block
The Copper Plumbing homepage on desktop and mobile: a dark film of copper pipes on a basement wall, with the word Copper set huge in cream across the bottom and a Book a plumber button.
One word, one film, one button. The wordmark carries the brand. There is no logo lockup and no stock-photo plumber.

The problem

Search for a plumber in Calgary and the first page of results looks like one site copied twenty times: primary blue, a smiling model in a clean polo, a coupon for $49 off, and a phone number in a red banner. When every company looks the same, the only thing left to compete on is price.

Copper Plumbing is not the cheapest crew in the city and does not want to be. It is a small team of licensed journeymen known for sweated copper repipes and water-heater work, and its customers find it through referrals. The site's job is to confirm what a neighbour has already told them: these are the careful ones.

Urgency still matters. Someone with water on the basement floor at 2 a.m. does not care about art direction. The design had to look considered without ever putting anything between a panicked homeowner and the phone.

The approach

Three moves, in order.

01

Let the material be the brand

The palette comes from the pipe: near-black grounds, warm cream type and copper highlights. The hero is a slow film of copper runs on a basement wall, and a droplet forming at a joint does the storytelling that a headline usually does.

02

Say it in one word

The name is set at twenty percent of the viewport width and pulls up word by word. A small asterisk, which the rest of the page never explains, gives it the feel of an editorial masthead rather than a franchise sign.

03

Keep the phone one tap away

The primary button in the hero dials the shop. The services grid leads with emergency repair, and the footer sets the number at display size, above the email and address, with the 24/7 line stated plainly.

The work

What we built.

The homepage

The Copper Plumbing hero at desktop width: a black pill navigation hanging from the top edge, a dim film of copper pipes, the word Copper in giant cream type, and a short description with a Book a plumber button.
The navigation hangs from the top edge like a tab, so it never covers the film. The description and button sit in the right four columns, beside the wordmark.
The story section: a dark card with a centred statement reading I am Dana Kowalczyk, a third-generation plumber, with the second phrase in italic serif, and a paragraph about fifteen years of Calgary work below it.
The owner speaks first. The paragraph brightens character by character as it scrolls into view, so the history is read rather than skimmed.
The services grid: a film card of a torch soldering a copper joint, then three dark cards for Emergency Repair, Water Heaters and Drains and Repipes, each with a copper icon and a checklist.
Emergency repair comes first in the grid. Each card is a checklist of specifics, like 60-minute response and camera inspection before a dig, instead of a paragraph of adjectives.

Contact and coverage

The contact footer: a headline reading Water where it shouldn't be? Call us first, the phone number (403) 555-0147 in large type, a Call now button, and columns for email, shop address and guarantee.
The phone number is set larger than any heading on the page except the wordmark. The service area covers every Calgary quadrant plus Airdrie, Chestermere and Okotoks, and is stated in one line above it.

On a phone

Three phone screens of the Copper Plumbing site: the hero with the wordmark and Book a plumber button, the owner's statement card, and the services section with the torch film and the Emergency Repair card.
Most emergency visits happen on a phone. The wordmark scales down to 26 percent of the viewport, the nav tightens to fit five links, and the cards stack in the same priority order.

Also delivered

Both films and all three icons were generated for the project from written art direction: a still image first, then animated into a silent loop so the colour and composition were settled before any motion. The films are under a megabyte combined and loop without sound.

Breakpoints designed, not just scaled

Copper Plumbing is a concept project. The company, owner and contact details are fictional, and the figures above are design targets rather than measured results.
